Kwon, Yong-Chul : Chain Reaction

 

Artist’s Note_ Movement series(gravity)

 

 

 

   Using stories derived from a relationship as a motif, I has worked to reveal it through chain action of mechanism. Especially, focusing on the relationship, I see a moment of effects within all cases between people in a curious view.

    For 'Chain Reaction-sound series', rolling ball was installed at the exhibition. Motion of a marble and electronic sign were sent to equipments around it to move and moving equipments were transformed circulation of a motor into various movements. Finally, as an amusement connecting to the equipments were played, all process made a result with sound. After it, in 'movement series', there were an equipment with seven switches in the center surrounded by seven different devices - works replaced circulation motor by various forms of moves - showed a relationship between different devices controlled by the central one.

    These works are an independent entity as well as the art work with each motion and bounded by an interacted relationship. As an extension of this view, the new exhibition talks about a variety of power applying to an object and a relationship between them through a moving kinetic work.

    New work is installed horizontally as putting water into five round glass bottles. Each bottle is tied by chain and rotates in a slow pace. Also, parallel bar under the bottles is connected to another crank. By each rotation, even though the bottle moves in place or a circle, surface of water inside and the ground are parallel. Also, all the physical processes are controlled by switch-control box in front of them. Again, by control box, the bottle with water rotates in place or circulation of the bar and it reveals a relationship between the movement by visible power and invisible power, gravity. The work aims to visualize uncontrollable power and the relationship created by those outside forces.
 

 

 

   나는 인간관계 속에서 파생되는 이야기들을 모티브로 하여, 기계장치의 연쇄작용을 통해 이를 드러내는 작업을 진행해 오고 있다. 특히, 관계에 주목하며 그 관계 안에서 발생하는 사건들 사이에서, 영향을 주고 또 받는 찰나의 순간을 흥미로운 시선으로 바라본다.

 

   Chain Reaction-sound series에서 롤링볼이라는 놀이문화를 전시장이라는 확장된 공간으로 가지고 들어와 설치하였다. 구슬의 운동과 그로부터 파생된 전기적 신호를 주변의 다른 장치로 보내 움직이게하고 움직인 장치들은 모터의 회전을 다양한 운동으로 전환시켰다. 최종적으로 장치에 연결된 악기를 연주하게 함으로써 소리라는 결과물로 드러내는 작업을 진행한 바 있다. 이후의 movement series에서는 7개의 스위치가 달린 장치를 중앙에 두고 주변에 7개의 서로다른 장치들_모터의 회전으로 시작된 다양한 형태의 움직임으로 치환시킨 작업들 을 연결함으로써 중앙의 장치로부터 작동의 유무를 통제받는 서로 다른 장치들간의 관계를 드러내는 작업을 진행하였다.

 

   이 모든 작업은 독립된 개체로써 각각의 움직임을 담은 작품인 동시에 어떤 매개물로 인해 서로 영향을 주고 받는 관계라는 틀로 묶이게 된다. 그리고 그 안을 자세히 살펴보면 각각의 장치로 영향을 미치는 찰나의 순간을 내포함으로써 본질이 드러나게 된다. 이러한 관점의 연장선 상에서 이번 전시는 움직이는 키네틱 작업을 통해 물체에 가해지는 여러 힘과 그 힘들간의 관계에 관한 이야기를 담고자 한다.

 

 -작업노트

 

   테이블 위에 찻잔이 놓여있다. 절반쯤 남은 커피. 다섯 손가락으로 찻잔의 위를 덮듯이 들어올려 좌우로 흔들다가 바닥 둥근면의 한 모퉁이로 세워 받치고 삐딱하게 찻잔을 바라본다. 찻 잔 안의 커피가 넘칠 듯 일렁이며 좌우로 요동치다 서서히 멈춘다. 찻잔은 내 손에 의해 움직이지만 그 안에 담긴 액체는 내 손 외에 중력과 관성력이라는 힘의 복합적인 영향으로 수평을 이루려 흔들리다 이내 지표면과의 절대 수평을 이루며 움직임을 멈춘다.

작품은 몇 개의 크고작은 유리병에 절반가량의 액체를 담아 수평으로 설치한다. 각각의 박스는 체인으로 엮여 느린 속도로 회전하게 된다. 또한 박스들이 설치된 평행으로 곧게 뻗은 바는 또다른 크랭크에 연결되어 움직인다. 이와 같은 각각의 회전들로 인해 박스는 제자리에서 혹은 원형을 그리며 축운동을 하게 되지만 안에 담겨진 물의 표면은 항상 지표면과 평행을 이룬다. 그리고 이 모든 물리적 운동은 주변의 switch_control box가 통제하도록 구성된다. 즉 컨트롤 박스에 의해 액체가 담긴 유리병이 제자리에서 혹은 평행바의 운동에 의해 각각 회전하게 되고, 이를 통해 눈으로 보여지는 동력에 의한 장치의 움직임과 직접적으로 드러나지는 않지만 주변의 움직임으로 인해 드러나는 중력이라는 힘의 관계를 드러내고자 한다. 본 작업은 이러한 외부의 힘들 사이에서 관계가 형성되고 절대 우위에 놓일 수 밖에 없는 불가항력의 힘을 가시화 하는 데 목적이 있다.
